Mr. Anthony Hylton replaces former
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Dr. K. D. Knight.
There is very little doubt that Mr. Hylton will be a vast
improvement over Dr. Knight.
Actually anybody would have been. It is common knowledge that Dr. K. D. Knight is a
non-performer. He was
a dismal failure as Minister of National Security, or Minister of
National Insecurity, as he was popularly called.
His stint as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, where
he was exiled after being booted from the Ministry of Security, is
so insignificant that it is not even worth mentioning.
Mr. Hylton, on the other hand, has
a reputation that is the direct opposite of Dr. Knight.
He was the Minister of Mining and Energy for a short while
before, succeeding Mr. Robert Pickersgill. While
he was there, he did far more work than Mr. Pickersgill could ever
dream or talk about. He
was also Minister of Foreign Trade.
During the time he was that Minister he did much, to
strengthen Jamaica's position internationally, especially in
regards to getting us better trading arrangements with important
trading blocks, like the World Trade Organization, the Free Trade
Area of the Americas (FTAA), CARICOM, The African, Caribbean and
Pacific Group, the European Union and others.
His efforts in these areas were very good and must be
commended.
He certainly made Dr. Knight look like an excellent seat
warmer and a “pappy-show”.
The People’s National Party surely has its contrasting
personalities!
If god was the one who recommended
to Mrs. Simpson-Miller that Mr. Hylton should be made the new
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, then he has given her sound
advice. If Mrs.
Simpson-Miller came to this conclusion on her own, then maybe she
is not so dumb after all!
When Mr. Hylton lost his seat in
Parliament, he also lost his position as Minister, a few years
ago. He has now been
re-appointed Minister, operating from the un-elected Senate.
Jamaica
surely needs less of the deadwood Ministers like Dr. K. D. Knight
and more able-bodied, brain-working and forward-thinking ministers
like minister Mr. Hylton if it is to move forward.
