Is Portia Simpson-Miller a D-U-M-M-Y?

Michael A. Dingwall (michael_a_dingwall@hotmail.com)

Ever since Jamaica’s new Prime Minister, Mrs. Portia Simpson-Miller assumed the top job; she has been distinguishing herself - in ways that makes one wonder if she is fit for the job. During the race for the leadership of the ruling People’s National Party (PNP), many labeled her as an idiot. I, for one, did not agree - at the time. Nowadays, however, I am beginning to wonder…

    Portia Simpson-Miller

"She has become a renowned preacher. During her recent visit to Brazil, at an intellectual conference ironically, she made much use of her bible - quoting passages from Isaiah - and embarrassing our country in the process. I am still puzzled - what was Mrs. Simpson-Miller doing at an intellectual conference?"

For one thing, notice that whenever she is in parliament, she is very silent - far too silent. The only time that she has said anything of note in parliament since she became Prime Minister is when she made her presentation to the last budget debate. That speech that she made was the most ridiculous and laughable speech I have ever heard in parliament. Her nonsensical references to god and the bible really brought Jamaica’s parliament into disrepute - making it into a laughing stock. Most Jamaicans thought that she was not making a speech about the nation’s business, but preaching to her god!

Since then and perhaps because of all the flack that she got for making such an ass of herself, she has decided to put her bible one side and shut up whenever she is in Parliament.

Recently, the opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) made another pointless attempt to force Commerce Minister Phillip Paulwell out of office. According to the JLP, Jamaica cannot afford Minister Paulwell. His constant blunders have cost Jamaica too much money and we simply cannot afford his “youthful exuberance” anymore. He has been held responsible for the failure of too many information technology projects - very costly projects. His last bungling has to do with his failure to prevent bad cement from grinding our construction industry to a halt. Hundreds of thousands of people lost their jobs - due to him, according to the JLP.

When the JLP brought the issue to Parliament, Minister Paulwell was as silent as a church mouse. This is not too surprising, as he really had no defense. However, while a few of his colleague ministers, and others were doing all they can to shield him, the Prime Minister, Mrs. Portia Simpson-Miller, who should be leading the defense, said nothing! Being someone who dared the JLP to “pull mi tongue”, it seems that, during that entire firestorm over Mr. Paulwell - the cat got her tongue.

This is not the only time that Mrs. Simpson-Miller has remained silent. During several other very important Parliamentary occasions the dear lady was numb. How come?

There have been some criticisms about her many foreign travels recently. Justified or not, she has been saying a lot - albeit from prepared speeches. She has become a renowned preacher. During her recent visit to Brazil, at an intellectual conference ironically, she made much use of her bible - quoting passages from Isaiah - and embarrassing our country in the process. I am still puzzled - what was Mrs. Simpson-Miller doing at an intellectual conference?

These days, it is becoming increasing clear that the poor lady is not fit for the job of Prime Minister. The recent report by the Contractor General that raised some serious concerns about the awarding of state contracts has received no comment from the Prime Minister! She claimed then that she did not get the time to go over it in detail, so she could say nothing. Now she is claiming that aspects of the report are in court, so she must remain silent. I, however, strongly believe that Mrs. Simpson-Miller simply does not understand what is in the report and as such she is numb.

If Mrs. Simpson-Miller is going to remain Prime Minister and even re-elected (this is Jamaica, you know) then we are really in for it. If she is going to be some sort of figurehead, then maybe things won’t be so bad. But if she is going to take a “hands on” approach then we are in for a very bumpy ride. If she is going to remain Prime Minister we will be riding in a car going at 100 miles per hour - with a blind preacher woman at the steering wheel!
