Give us back the old Asafa

I am sure I am not the only Jamaican who was more than a little disappointed in Asafa Powell after hearing his post-race, trackside interview following his win at a grand prix track meet recently. He came across as cocky, arrogant and a "motor-mouth", in other words just like an American sprinter.

Jamaica is badly in need of some role models and like it or not he is one. Asafa already owns the world record and the talk-fest is unnecessary. The entire Jamaica knows he is the best and the world does as well. I have never seen him finish a race and appear fully extended. In fact I am yet to see him lunge at a finish line and he always goes across it running upright. My only concern is that he suffers no injury and gets to meet Justin Gatlin one of these days. I prefer the old Asafa, less talk and more action. Remember: "cock mouth kill cock".

JUNGLE BAY, Dominica: RESORT WORKERS GIVE BACK TO COMMUNITY

DELICES, DOMINICA- Employees of Jungle Bay, Dominica’s new adventure and wellness resort and spa, plan to launch the Caribbean tourism industry’s first employee funded community grant program.

Jungle Bay officially opened in November 2005 offering guests a luxury outdoor adventure vacation experience that is linked to the ecology, culture and economy of its surrounding rural communities. The Jungle Bay concept has been quite successful resulting in a great first winter season for the employees, the majority of whom come from the surrounding villages/communities. Recognizing the tangible benefits of sustainable tourism at its best, the employees of Jungle Bay decided to contribute a portion of their tips and gratuities towards a fund to undertake special projects and programs aimed at improving their communities. Jungle Bay Resort & Spa has agreed to show support and strengthen the initiative by matching its employee fund contributions.

The first two grants will be presented at the inaugural “JUNGLE BAY Employee Community Grant” ceremony to be held on Thursday, June 22, 2006 at 3:00 PM at Jungle Bay Resort & Spa in Delices.

The recipients of the first two grants in the amount of two thousand dollars each will be the HOUSE OF HOPE, a home for orphans in Delices and the Petite Savanne Village Council, to provide running water to an underserved area of that community with several elderly and indigent residents. Sam Raphael, Proprietor & General Manager of Jungle Bay Resort has expressed delighted with the initiative, "…We are very proud of our employees. It's the first of its kind in the Caribbean that I am aware of…It is wonderful when businesses give back to communities but it is even more meaningful when community members support themselves … tourism should be a tool to help improve surrounding communities. Our team is making this happen…we are extremely proud of our employees."

Jungle Bay Resort & Spa is a picturesque resort constructed entirely of volcanic stone and tropical hardwood painstakingly designed with minimal disturbance to the coastal forest trees and other natural features. The 55-acre resort is located along the rugged Atlantic coast. The accommodations consist of 35 luxurious hardwood cottages nestled between the rainforest canopy like birdhouses with rustic yet elegant furnishings, private balconies, semi-outdoor showers and more. Other amenities include large Yoga studios with polished wooden floors, a volcanic stone pool, a pavilion style restaurant featuring tasty, locally grown organic cuisine and fresh fruit juices and a health spa with massage studios that open to the roaring ocean. Jungle bay offers guests a range of activities such as hikes to waterfalls, mineral springs the famous boiling lake and other world class natural attractions, biking, ocean kayaking snorkeling etc. The property is becoming a favorite for independent travelers seeking a unique experience, honeymoons and escape weddings, yoga, corporate team building and other group retreats. Jungle Bay supports several community based programs and initiatives aimed at improving the living standards of the people of its surrounding communities. One major Jungle Bay social program is A Carib Scholarship Fund, which currently pays the high school tuition for 216 Amerindian students from the island’s “Carib Territory”. The Employee Community Grant initiative is consistent with Jungle Bay’s socially responsible tourism philosophy.

Marshall Men's Soccer Adds Four to 2006 Signing Class

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall men's soccer team has added four more student-athletes to its 2006 class of signees, Thundering Herd head coach Bob Gray has announced. West Virginia University transfer Kolby LaCrone will come to Huntington along with the Tyler Junior College trio of Karl Haggon, Jermaine Johnson and Avneet Shergill. LaCrone has three years of eligibility remaining, while Haggon, Johnson and Shergill each have two left. The four student-athletes join Matt Fessenden and Sterling Flunder, who signed letters of intent with Marshall in February.

"The addition of all four players brings instant competition for starting spots on our squad," Gray said. "Karl, Jermaine and Avneet all have played at one of the premier junior college programs in the country, and Kolby was a key contributor at West Virginia. Their experience will be invaluable immediately."

Tyler Junior College finished the 2005 season 13-3-2 and ranked No. 11 in the NJCAA poll.

Haggon, a defender from Peterlee County, Durham, England, was an NJCAA and NSCAA All-American last season. He also served as team captain.

"We are excited to be getting a junior college All-American from a top-notch program," Gray said. "Karl will bring instant leadership to the team and can fill some holes in the middle of the defense. We have been unlucky with injuries, thus he will provide immediate depth to our squad."

Johnson, a midfielder from St. Andrew, Jamaica, was an NJCAA All-Region selection in 2005. He also hails from the same high school, Campertown H.S., as Claude Hunt, a former Marshall soccer standout. Johnson's coach there, Barrington Gaynor, was a former player of Gray's and a four-time All-American at Alderson Broaddus College.

Johnson, a midfielder from St. Andrew, Jamaica, was an NJCAA All-Region selection in 2005. He also hails from the same high school, Camperdown H.S., as Claude Hunt, a former Marshall soccer standout. Johnson's coach there, Barrington Gaynor, was a former player of Gray's and a four-time All-American at Alderson Broaddus College.

"Jermaine Johnson is an outstanding talent that has represented his country internationally," Gray said. "He will bring an individual creativity that could single-handedly help break down opponents. His strength is his ability to find the open man. He will be looked upon to provide an immediate impact in the central midfield."

Shergill, a midfielder from Seattle, Wash., was an NJCAA and NSCAA All-Region pick last year.

"Avneet Shergill is a very skillful individual that we will look to help us out up front to score goals," Gray said. "He has the ability to take players on one-on-one and has an excellent shot with either foot. He also is a specialist when taking free kicks."

LaCrone comes to Marshall via West Virginia University, where he played for one year with the Mountaineers. He competed in 16 matches last year, starting once. He starred at Tri-Valley High School in Zanesville, Ohio, where he holds the state record for career assists with 109. LaCrone also is 18th in state history with 108 career goals. He is one of just two players in state annals to record 30 assists and 40 goals in one season (34 assists, 46 goals in 2003).

"Kolby is an outstanding forward who has the ability to score in every game," Gray said. "He is quick, skillful and has a competitive nature that will fit in well for our squad. I believe he could be one piece of the puzzle that we have been missing."

Marshall opens its exhibition season at home Aug. 19 against West Virginia, then begins regular season play Aug. 25 in Huntington versus Manhattan.

Was Michael Dingwall’s article [Let’s send our idlers to Iraq] meant as a joke? He can't be serious.

Black student gets jailed for studying!

The following a letter was sent to the president of WESTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY, Karen W. Morse

I hope everyone is outraged at what happened to me. It can happen to anyone. We, as people who love The Truth - that is, use it in our work must stand against this type of aggression. I was thrown into prison for "studying"! After running into the same university police officer for 5 times in one school year. Wherein he waited until Memorial Day Weekend to show this very unacceptable behavior from a person trusted by The University and Students.

I am now trying to secure attorneys to fight this all the way. Please take your time to investigate this matter and express your outrage to the President of WESTERN & THE PRESS, yourself. This is her email address: president@www.edu

Program your sleep, as I show on my website, for one night and you will understand the words of Martin Luther King, Jr.: "Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we [OUR MINDS] are free at last!"

Thank you for your support.
