Black History 4 Young People

Dr. Kwaku Person-Lynn (Rasjj@aol.com)

This summer, Dr. Kwaku Person-Lynn will conduct his groundbreaking class “Black History 4 Young People” for six Saturdays beginning June 17th, from 10:00am to Noon. The class will take place at View Park Prep, 3855 West Slauson Avenue, on the corner of Keniston and Slauson, approximately 9 blocks west of Crenshaw. A parent/guardian orientation will be held at the school site, Wednesday, June 14th at 7:00pm. Parents/guardians can register their child at that time. The age range is 12yrs. to 17yrs. Last year's class contained 132 students from all over Los Angeles County, with two from out of state. The class size limit this year is 150.

The class content will involve students learning the history, culture and accomplishments of Black people all over the world. They will see the evidence of how Africans were traveling between Africa and the Americas almost 1000 years before Columbus. Other topics to be covered will be the historical significance of the 'N' word, the struggle to receive an education during the Civil Rights Movement, the history and culture of Belize, the history of the Black Indians of New Orleans, and other topics.

An exciting addition to the class is the participation of African Ancestry, a company that traces the African origin of families through DNA tracking. A few months ago there was a special television program on PBS that featured the company's DNA tracking of Dr. Ben Carson, Whoopi Goldberg, Bishop T.D. Jakes, Dr. Mae Jemison, Quincy Jones, Dr. Sara Lawrence-Lightfoot, Chris Tucker and Oprah Winfrey. Black History 4 Young People will be the first class African Ancestry will offer its services to 15 students for free. It will be the pilot program for entering school systems across the country.

”Students will experience subject matter that will not be covered in their educational career, but is vital to their understanding of who they are, where they came from and what their people have done on this earth. The level of self-respect and confidence will grow immensely”, said Dr. Kwaku.

The fee for the class is $60. Those wishing to sponsor a child may do so by visiting www.drkwaku.com. Registration forms are available there or by calling (213) 368-4976.
