The arm that was created for this man was connected not only to his body - but also to his brain. With just a thought, the arm can respond to this man’s request. It can obey the signals that his brain sends to take up an object, to lift his arm, to move his fingers and many other things. The arm even has very advanced systems that allow the man to “feel” objects.
In these advanced countries - science and technology takes precedence. We have seen how the restoration of sight to the blind may not as distant in the future as was once thought. Another man, who is (or should I say - was) blind recently was fitted with special “eyes” that allowed him to have vague vision. These “eyes” were wired to his brain - allowing his brain to receive translated signals that allowed him to “see”.
What does these and other such technological developments mean for mankind? First of all, it means, quite clearly, that these advanced countries where these developments are taking place will continue to increase the gap between themselves and backward nations like ours. However, for the average man, this has much more relevance.
Image not being able to see or hear from birth or for many years - one would not be as able as the person with such senses. Restoring such functions to these physically challenged persons would be a great boost to all. These people would be in a much better position to integrate (or re-integrate) themselves into society. Many of these people, especially those who once had these functions, would have their self-esteem greatly restored. Many of these persons would also begin to think of themselves as less as a burden as many things that they could not do before, things that the rest o us take for granted, they would now be able to do. Naturally, the rest of us would benefit from the increased contributions from these formerly physically challenged people.
It seems clear that in the future, many of the challenges faced by many people with physical defects will become things of the past. With the rapid advance of science and technology, many physically challenged persons will soon find many lost functions restored by attached or implanted technologies. For many of these persons, the future is indeed bright.
